Hygienic FFKM for the Pharmaceutical Sector

Perfluoroelastomers (FFKM) bridge the gap between non-elastic PTFE and elastomers that do not offer sufficient media resistance, e.g. NBR and EPDM. O-rings and molded parts made of Simriz® represent the ideal combination of a high degree of media and temperature resistance with excellent elastic performance. Freudenberg Process Seals has developed the new white Simriz 506 to precisely meet the needs of pharmaceutical facilities and sterile components.

With 71 to 72%, high-fluorine FFKM elastomers have a level of fluorine content that rivals PTFE's theoretical 75.98%. As such, the Freudenberg perfluoroelastomer Simriz offers exceptional resistance to reactive media, solvents, acids and alkalis in a broad range of temperatures and pressures. In fact, its chemical resistance is so universal that it can be used for the reliable static sealing of nearly any medium.

Tailored to pharmaceutical use through compounding
The white FFKM compound Simriz 506 was developed with mineral fillers to meet the most demanding requirements. Seals and molded parts made of Simriz 506 have precisely the same chemical, mechanical and thermal properties as the trusted black Simriz 494. The use of inert mineral fillers precludes leaching in contact with the media to be sealed - an essential prerequisite for seals in pharmaceutical and biotechnological applications. These seals can also be used in extremely aggressive solvents, such as those utilized in materials synthesis. Needless to say, Simriz 506 also meets all pharmaceuticals-related requirements.

Simriz 506 has also demonstrated its very good mechanical performance, excellent chemical resistance and low susceptibility to leaching in numerous tests. In comparative immersion tests in ethylenydiamine, acetonitrile, ethyl acetate and further pharmaceuticals-relevant solvents, it received top marks.

Simriz seals maintain their cold flexibility down to -12°C and can be used in operating temperatures up to + 230°C. The perfluoroelastomer's advantages lie not only in its outstanding chemical, thermal and physical performance, but above all in the fact that applications can involve all three of these factors at once - a challenge Simriz can master.
