Critical processes and also demanding or aggressive media in food and pharmaceutical production make it necessary to use highly stable seals. With a new generation of EPDM materials, Freudenberg Process Seals opens up individual optimization potential for plant constructors and plant operators. The new EPDM materials with a temperature range of up to 180 °C offer considerably higher stability in water vapor and can even stand up to 210 °C for a short time. In addition to that, the new EPDM generation is ideally resistant to CIP/SIP.
Regardless of whether designed as an O-ring, shaped part, lip seal or diaphragms, the outstanding qualities of the new EPDM generation can be used in three different degrees of hardness
70 EPDM 291 is the standard elastomer, ideally suited for static seals. For dynamically stressed seals, a friction-reducing RFN coating optimizes the properties of the component. With RFN™ - Reduced Friction by Nanotechnology – Freudenberg modifies elastomer materials so that the friction coefficient is not only drastically reduced, but this minimization remains virtually constant over the whole service life of the component. The harder 85 EPDM 292 can be used for dynamic seals. 60 EPDM 290 in contrast is designed especially for diaphragms; here the excellent material properties are combined with high flexibility.
Freudenberg Process Seals has a very wide range of approvals for this new generation of EPDM materials. These materials comply with the specifications of the European standard DIN EN 681 – 1 WB and also the US American NSF 61. The important drinking water regulations from Germany DVGW (KTW, W 270 and W 534), Great Britain (WRAS) and France (ACS) are met by 70 EPDM 291 without any reservations. All three EPDM qualities also even meet the strict requirements of the US FDA agency. The high degree of purity of 70 EPDM 291 and of 85 EPDM 292 is underlined by the approval according to USP Class VI. The new EPDM generation also qualifies for the 3-A® Sanitary Standard Class I.I. And of course all three EPDM qualities are “ADI free®” and therefore highly suitable for the drinks, food and pharmaceutical industry.
